Dreams of Insanity

I have proof that I must be going crazy. I had a dream that I was tatting a wedding dress. And now I'm actually considering attempting it. Not a dress embellished with tatting. Oh no. That would be to easy. A dress made entirely of tatted lace.

I actually spent most of my work day thinking over what sort of thread I would use, what shape and stye of dress, what kind of pattern I would need for the tatting, whether to bead or not, etc. If I were to start this project it would probably take me a number of years to complete. YEARS. And we all now how horrible I am with time management. What am I thinking?

Ideally, I'd like the overall look to be something like this dress by Claire Pettibone.

It would require a kind of ingenuity I've never before attempted. A real challenge. I think that's the reason the whole idea has such an attraction for me. It would definitely take tatting to a whole new level.

Yup. I must be crazy. I think I'll try it.

  6. I have tatted many bridal wedding dresses for the Barbie dolls and have enjoyed each and every design. (Have also knitted one and even crocheted another one.) So I have no doubt that you can do a whole dress. Don't think of it in that way - the whole item. Think of it as each section - arm, front, back and skirt and work each section and it will all come together in no time. Do take lots of pictues as you progress and keep us posted. Can't wait to see the beautiful design you come up with!

  7. Oh My!!
That's going to be one massive work!
But just think of the end, it would be something so exclusive and beautiful. Can't wait to see you getting started on it.
    Best wishes ,

  9. @ TypsTatting: It will probably be awhile yet before I actually start tatting on this project. First I will need to gather supplies and learn to sew so I can make the lining of the dress. lol Just thinking of the cost in thread alone has my head reeling... but I think it would be worth it.

  10. I once crocheted a "smock top" (back in the 70's) out of thread. The feeling of accomplishment was indeed great. The weight of the top was also great. A lace covering will not be as heavy as something solid but you're also talking about a full length skirt. Good luck!

  11. are we thinking about getting married too, or just about the dress? inquiring minds want to know---

  12. LOL, no we're not getting married. At least not as far as I know. Bf and I are perfectly happy with our relationship the way it is. If he proposes, than we probably will. Otherwise we'll be the 80 year old couple who's been together since high school but never bothered with marriage. Either way, I'm happy. Though a wedding would give me an excuse to actually wear the dress...

  13. Wouldn't that be a lovely dress though! I've seen photos of wedding gowns done in Irish crochet, so I'm sure one in tatting would be feasible. Glad that you're going to be the one doing it and not me, though. It'd drive me bonkers!

  14. I love this idea. My mom knitted a wedding dress for one of my sisters and it was gorgeous. Wonder ifshe still has it? I want to see your finished gown.

  15. This style of dress would look beautiful tatted, especially the scalloped bottom. I hope you do tackle it! (I thought I had commented on this post last week, but I guess I didn't!)
